Yoav Litvin a grandi à New York dans les années 80, entouré de ce que l’on pourrait qualifier d’« old-school graffiti ». Il y a plusieurs années, suite à une blessure sportive qui a empêché Litvin de pratiquer presque toute activité physique, il a commencé à explorer la ville à pied, pouce par pouce, tout en découvrant simultanément l’art urbain de la ville. En tant que photographe, Litvin a tout naturellement commencé à documenter les rues de la ville à travers son appareil photo, amassant ainsi de la documentation visuelle du paysage de la ville, d’où a germé en lui l'idée de créer Outdoor Gallery.

Growing up in New York City during the ‘80s, what one would now refer to as “old-school graffiti” surrounded Yoav Litvin. Several years ago, following a sports injury that disallowed Litvin from any physical activity other than walking, he began exploring the city by foot for miles upon miles while simultaneously discovering the urban arts of the city. Litvin found himself overwhelmed by the progression of graffiti culture into the contemporary trend of street art currently flourishing New York City, which led to an avid following of the movement. As a photographer, Litvin naturally documented the city streets through his camera, resulting in visual recording of the city’s landscape, as well as the idea to create Outdoor Gallery.

“After spending hours walking in the streets of NYC chronicling street art and graffiti, I realized that I wanted to contribute by compiling a document that is devoted to the contemporary scene, showcasing its richness and providing a stage for the artists to express themselves. At that point I had absolutely no doubt that a book was a project I needed to do. It was a matter of applying my belief, passion, determination, patience and hard work to make my vision a reality. Making a book is a creative process just like any: beautiful, rewarding yet also can be very frustrating and painful,” describes Litvin.

The end result of this creative process is Outdoor Gallery, a visual and written collection of 46 of New York most prominent street artist. Selecting the artists that he encountered most often on the street, the resulting compilation of artists is diverse and unmediated. As New York is what Litvin describes as the “Mecca of modern graffiti and street art,” any conceivable manifestation of urban art exists within the realms of the Big Apple. Litvin elaborates that “on its streets, one can find graffiti: throwups, tags, burners, as well as street art in all its forms, ranging from enormous murals to the tiniest of stickers.”

The book offers the unique opportunity to witness the creative process of several artists. For example, Litvin photographed Jilly Ballistic’s 9-step process of wheatpasting in a subway station, as well as Adam Dare while pasting his classic bunnies from a scaffold. Remarkable documentation, such as this, alongside insightful artist profiles, render the book into a must-read.

The street art of New York City frequently aims to share and promote particular ideas, both positive and critical, in a creative and engaging manner. Litvin views street art as the “non-violent rebellion against the establishment, whether it be the traditional art establishment, or our capitalist/corporate one.” Through the nearly universal usage of social media, images of such ideas and art spread almost instantaneously and are seen by millions. Although not a street artist himself, as a photographer and author, Litvin has equally engaged in the development and progression of the movement, propelling the spread an ephemeral, engaging, playful, and rebellious form of art.

« Après avoir passé des heures à marcher dans les rues de New York et fait la chronique de son street art et graffiti, je réalisais que je voulais y contribuer et compiler un document se consacrant à la scène contemporaine et mettant en vedette sa richesse, cette scène fournissant ainsi une tribune qui permet aux artistes de s’exprimer. À ce moment-là, je n’avais absolument aucun doute sur le fait que ce livre était un projet que je devais réaliser. Il était, à travers celui-ci, question de mettre en application ma conviction, ma passion, ma détermination, ma patience et mon travail acharné réalisé en vue de faire de ma vision une réalité. Faire un livre est un processus créatif: beau et gratifiant, mais pouvant aussi s’avérer très frustrant et douloureux », décrit Litvin.

Le résultat de ce processus créatif est Outdoor Gallery, une collection visuelle et écrite regroupant des œuvres de 46 des artistes de rue les plus importants de New York. Litvin décrit New York comme la « Mecque du graffiti et du street art moderne. » Toute manifestation envisageable d’art urbain existe dans les rues de la Grosse Pomme.

Le livre offre l’occasion unique de voir le processus créatif de plusieurs artistes. Par exemple, Litvin a photographié le processus de wheatpasting en 9 étapes de Jilly Ballistic dans une station de métro, ainsi que celui d’Adam Osez, qui colle ses lapins classiques à partir d'un échafaudage. Avec cette documentation remarquable, amassée par Litvin, agrémentée de profils perspicaces d’artistes, ce livre se veut sans contredit une lecture incontournable.

Le street art de New York vise souvent à partager et à promouvoir des idées particulières, à la fois positives et critiques, d'une manière créative et pertinente. Litvin considère le street art comme la « rébellion non-violente contre l’establishment, que ce soit l’establishment de l'art traditionnel ou le capitalisme d'entreprise en place. » Grâce à l'utilisation presque universelle des médias sociaux, les images véhiculées illustrant ces idées et ces formes d’art se propagent presque instantanément et sont vues par des millions de personnes. Bien qu’il ne soit pas un artiste de rue lui-même, Litvin s’est engagé à sa façon, soit en tant que photographe et auteur, dans le développement et la progression du mouvement, contribuant ainsi à la propagation d'une forme éphémère, engageante, ludique et rebelle d'art.
