The Power of Socially-Frustrated Artists

In almost every city you go, you will be surrounded by street art. Often, it is eye-catching. Often, it is thought-provoking. But when you come across something that is both beautiful and critical, it is hard not to stop and stare at the piece on the street to analyze the message that the artist is trying to convey.

Montreal Illustrator and Artist: Jason Wasserman

Earlier this week, we released three new prints by Jason Wasserman that feature classic scenes of Montreal. From the Lachine Canal, to the Theatre Snowdon to the Turcot Interchange, Wasserman depicts various neighborhoods of the city in a illustrative, comic-book style. With the launch of these new prints, we thought it was time to uncover the story of the Montreal artist.

#KWayCulture

Matt Feigin, President of K-Way North America and local Montrealer, took an interest in contemporary street art about two years ago when he first saw the work of Stikki Peaches. He contacted us at Station 16 to buy a piece, and his interest in contemporary street art has only grown since. He has become a small collector. He now owns pieces by Whatisadam, as well as a series by Peter Andrew & Derek Blais, purchased while at The Scope Art Fair in NYC.  Matt actually sponsored the renowned Instagram street art curators Instagrafite to join us in New York to cover Scope and the week in NYC. That visit led to a series of devoted Instagram posts called the K-Way Culture walk. Check them out on Instagram with #KWayCulture.

POINT BLANK

Station 16 Gallery is thrilled to present Toronto artists, Peter Andrew and Derek Blais, in their first Montreal exhibition, Point Blank. Internationally recognized for its captivating photography, Point Blank is an ongoing project depicting handguns in profound detail. Photographing 100 guns in total, Point Blank examines the aesthetic value of the lethal weapons head-on. The high-resolution, frontal portraits display every fiber and scratch of the gun, creating a startling, yet stunning, portrayal.

New Habs mural by Eric Clement

A DEAD FLY ON THE WINDSHIELD OF TIME: Part I of "What is an Artist?"

In early January, I settled down with Sarah Thornton’s new book 33 Artists in 3 Acts in which she poses what appears to be the simplest of questions: What is an artist? Within the first few pages, Thornton is already dismayed to have people reply: “An artist is someone who makes art.”

I scoffed. My answer would be so much more profound, detailed and smart! Clearly, an artist is… blank. What is an artist? Over dinner, my husband, who is not involved in the art world, answered promptly: “Emily, it’s simple. An artist is a creator.” Really? This seemed too all-encompassing for my taste. One can create with no intent towards art. No, it wasn’t simple at all.

Montréal Goes to Miami Art Basel

For the last 4 years, Montreal stood out on the international scene as one of the main destination and a go-to place when it comes to street art. This acknowledgement is mainly due to our local artists and the various organizations working hard to promote the Montreal scene.

Next December, from the 1st to  the 7th, a delegation of artists, galleries, and organizations from Quebec will be present at the international art fair held in Miami at Art Basel/Wynwood Walls.

A Global Street Art Story: Poland

For the latest edition of A Global Street Art Story, Station 16 Gallery is excited to announce that Olek is representing Poland.  The 6-colour silkscreen print with 3D puff ink and crystalline  is the first print for the crochet artist. The extent of Olek’s crocheting abilities is nearly infinitesimal, transforming everything from cars, billboards, everyday objects, public sculptures, trains, and even people into her crocheted masterpieces. Always daring, her work is consistently witty and whimsical, often exuding political and social undertones.

After covering the city with his diamonds during the 2014 MURAL festival, Station 16 Gallery is pleased to present Le Diamantaire in his first solo show in North America. Le Diamantaire works with discarded mirrors, reshaping the scrapped material into a unique form of street art. Each diamond is hand-cut and painted into various sizes and colors, leaving no two diamonds alike. The opening reception for "Le Diamantaire: Artiste Urbain de Paris," will take place on August 7th from 6-9pm and will run through the 28th of August.

Mathieu Connery's work naturally commands attention with his minimalist, abstract style. The artist, who took part in the 2014 MURAL festival, created numerous works on the sidewalks of Saint Laurent Boulevard. With a non-traditional approach to street art, he diversifies his techniques and textures while maintaining a cohesive style.

English version by Alexandra Jagodzinski

Zlion devant sa contribution pour le Festival MURALE 2014 / Zlion in front of his 2014 MURAL Festival contribution

Zilon, the self-taught artist often labeled as the godfather of street art in Quebec, joins the roster of Station 16 Gallery. Deeply influenced by comic books, Zilon has been drawing ever since he was a child, which led him to his own style early in his career. "My art, I live, I breathe, it's not something I do part-time or as a tourist," exclaims Zilon, claiming that he makes art for himself, although it is constantly under public scrutiny. Having lived a difficult childhood, art has proven to be a creative outlet that allows him to survive the torments of daily life. Full-fledged artist, Zilon feels accomplished when he speaks, but more so when he can put his ideas on paper.

Le Diamantaire : l’art de surprendre

This week we have a special blog interview with Parisian artist Le Diamantaire. Sabrina Desjardins, our newest Station16 intern, lead the interview on our behalf! Please note that this interview is only in french, with an english version to follow later this month.

Street Artist DAIN Brings Glamour & Graffiti To Your Walls

Using images of Hollywood icons and fashion models, the New York based artist DAIN juxtaposes celebrity icons, creating hybrids that dissociate the familiar to create something surreal.  Coupling male and female identity, playing with proportions and contexts, DAIN unified characters, which simultaneously complements and detracts from the whole. In his correlated images, our idealizations of these famous personalities become empty.  This month, Leanna Valente, author of Art & Fashion, was given the opportunity to interview the artist.
